Why 350?

The most recent science tells us that unless we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, we will cause huge and irreversible damage to the earth. Since the pre-Industrial Revolution and for the entire evolution of the human species, concentration of carbon in the atmosphere remained roughly 275 parts per million. Now, according to NASA scientist, James Hansen, the bottom line for the planet is 350 parts per million carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We are currently at 383 parts per million.

With over 70% of the energy and 38% of carbon emissions in the US consumed in the construction, operation and decommissioning, the built environment is the single biggest contributor to anthropogenic global warming. All building projects new and existing need focused robust strategies for carbon emissions reductions. Retrofitting existing buildings within a short time frame is a priority and more importantly making sure their performance conforms to best practice standards.

Engineering 350 can provide the leadership, knowledge and experience to reduce the carbon emissions of the built environment with over 50 years of combined experience in high performance and low energy building design and renovation. No project is too small; all projects in the built environment need to be zero carbon projects. Every project counts.
